Double bass (classical) guide

Components

1) Scales and arpeggios:

  • One octave: F, G, Bb, C, A, D major scales and their relative harmonic minors.
  • Two octaves F, G, Bb or C major.

2) Études: Two contrasting etudes to be chosen from:

  • E. Nanny:  Méthode pour contrebasse, vol 1
  • F. Rabbath:  Méthode pour contrebasse, vol 1 or 2
  • F. Simandl:  Method for Double-Bass, part 1

3) Piece:

  • One piece, 3 to 5 minutes maximum. (ex: Vance, Progressive Repertoire vol 2) OR one movement from a sonata in the Bass repertoire (ex: sonatas of  B. Marcello)

4) Sight reading

  • To be given at the audition

You greatly improve your chances of acceptance when you prepare your audition requirements with the guidance of a qualified Double Bass teacher.
