Drumset audition guide

Components

1) Rudiments:

  • Single-stroke roll in 16th notes and triplets
  • Double-stroke roll
  • Paradiddle

2) Reading (prepared by the candidate, please bring music to the audition):

  • One snare drum piece which incorporates quarter notes, eighth notes and sixteenths
  • One drumset independence piece where bass drum, hihat, snare drum and ride cymbal are played simultaneously (eg. Chapin, Chester)

3) Rhythms: the following rhythms on drumset will be requested. Versatility is a requirement.

  • Swing (Jazz)
  • Rock + Funk
  • 1 or 2 Latin rhythms (mambo, bossa nova, etc.)
  • Short drum-solo with original ideas

4) Sight reading (given at the audition)

You greatly improve your chances of acceptance when you prepare your audition requirements with the guidance of a qualified Drumset teacher.
