Classical flute audition guide

Components

1) Scales and arpeggios:

  • Up to 4 flats and 4 sharps, major and relative harmonic minor. Technique to be prepared slurred and detached.

2) Two works contrasting in style and tempo

  • These may be movements of two sonatas/concerti or separate works.
  • Études are acceptable providing the length is at least one full page.
  • The total time of the candidate’s selections should not exceed ten minutes.

It is strongly recommended that students audition with a piano accompanist for one or more of their pieces.

3) Sight reading (given at the audition)

Suggested minimum level

  • Ed. Cavally: Melodious and Progressive, book 1
  • Garibaldi:  Études Mignonnes
  • Handel:  Sonatas
  • Fauré: Sicilienne from Pelléas and Mélisande
  • Mozart:  Andante in C major
  • Telemann: Sonata in F major

Repertoire of an equivalent or higher level is encouraged (high school band parts are not acceptable).

You greatly improve your chances of acceptance when you prepare your audition requirements with the guidance of a qualified Flute teacher.
