French horn (classical) guide

Components

1) Scales and arpeggios

  • C, G, D, Bb & Eb major and relative minors (harmonic and melodic)
  • Arpeggios: 1 octave, slurred and detached  

2) Studies: Any two contrasting studies from:  

  • Horner: Primary Studies for the French Horn (preferably from the last 50 studies of the book)
  • Kopprasch: 60 Studies
  • Or equivalent material

3) Piece: Candidate’s choice

4) Sight reading (given at the audition)

You greatly improve your chances of acceptance when you prepare your audition requirements with the guidance of a qualified French Horn teacher. During your instrument audition, you will be required to sing back individual pitches and short patterns of notes played to you on the piano.
