Classical percussion audition guide

Components

1) Rudiments:

  • Double stroke roll (5, 7, 9, etc.)
  • Paradiddle (single and double)
  • Closed or buzz roll

2) Reading:

  • Benjamin Podemski’s  Standard Method for Snare Drum, study no. 8 or the equivalent level in another method book (i.e. a one-page study using eighth, quarter and sixteenth notes)

3) Sight reading

  • To be given

4) Xylophone-Marimba:

  • An elementary knowledge of the keyboard (similar in layout to a piano keyboard)

5) Drum Set (Optional):

  • Demonstrate 1 or 2 different beats in Jazz or Rock styles with or without fills.
  • Play examples from standard method books (ie. Chapin, Weckl, etc.)

These are the minimum requirements. Students who can play more advanced material are encouraged to do so and will be given priority in the selection process. You greatly improve your chances of acceptance when you prepare your audition requirements with the guidance of a qualified percussion teacher.
