Classical piano audition guide

Components

1) Scales:

  • In all keys (major, minor, and chromatic), 4 octaves, hands together in eighth notes,  ♩ = mm. 100.
  • Knowledge of scales a 3rd, 6th, and 10th apart, as well as in contrary motion, is not obligatory but will increase the candidate’s chance of acceptance.

2) Tonic triads and arpeggios:

  • In all keys with inversions, 4 octaves, hands together.
  • Diminished 7th  and dominant 7th arpeggios are not compulsory but will increase the candidate’s chance of acceptance.

3) Repertoire:  Mandatory two contrasting pieces: minimum level McGill Conservatory of Music SEC V, Royal Conservatory of Music grade 8 or Vincent d’Indy Sixième Année.

  • J.S. Bach Two-part Invention, Three-part Invention or Prelude and Fugue
  • “Sonata Form” first movement of a Classical Sonata by Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven or another Classical composer.  The “Sonata Form” first movement must be a fast tempo.  The Adagio sostenuto first movement of the “Moonlight Sonata”, op. 27, no. 2, by Beethoven, although very wellknown and popular, does not fit the criteria and is not an acceptable choice.

At least one of the two Mandatory pieces above must be played fully memorized. A third piece of the candidate’s choice is optional.

4) Sight reading:

  • A suitable level will be given at the audition, to be played hands together.

You greatly improve your chances of acceptance when you prepare your audition requirements with the guidance of a qualified Piano teacher.
