Classical viola audition guide

Components

1) Scales

  • C, D, & G major, e minor, 4 notes slurred per bow, three octaves

2) Arpeggios

  • C & D major/minor/diminished 7/dominant 7, 3 notes slurred per bow, three octaves

3) One Etude chosen by the applicant

4) Two contrasting pieces

5) Sight reading will be given  

Memorization of scales and arpeggios is required. Memorization of etude and pieces is not required but encouraged.  A copy of the etude and repertoire should be provided to the jury.

  • Repertoire:
    • Rogers, Sonatina
    • Handel, Concerto in b minor
    • Eccles, Sonata in g minor
    • Glazunov, Elegie
    • Veracini, Sonata in em
    • Hoffmeister, Concerto
    • Marais, 6 Dances
    • Bach, Suites for Cello, assorted movements from suites 1, 2, or 3
    • Stamitz, Concerto

Repertoire of an equivalent or more advanced level is encouraged.

You greatly improve your chances of acceptance when you prepare your audition requirements with the guidance of a qualified Viola teacher.
