Jazz viola audition guide

Components

1) Scales & Arpeggios: prepared three octaves, detached, slurred by 2 and slurred by 4

  • C, D and Eb major,  o c, g and e minor (harmonic or melodic)

2) One Classical Etude

3) One Jazz Standard

  • One chorus of melody, at least one chorus of improvisation and then one chorus of melody

4) One Blues (with improvisation) in D, F, G or Bb

5) Sight reading will be given

Suggested Repertoire

Classical Etudes: Mazas, op. 36, book 1 "Études Spéciales" or candidate’s choice of an equivalent or more advanced level

Jazz Standards: Autumn Leaves, All the Things You Are, How High the Moon, Solar, Blue Bossa, There Will Never Be Another You, Body and Soul

Blues: Billie’s Bounce, Tenor Madness, Sonny Moon For Two, Straight No Chaser
