Voice (classical and music theatre) audition guide

Components

Repertoire choices must be memorized (no lyrics or sheet music) and accompanied, preferably by piano or the accompaniment C.D. available commercially from Schirmer (listed below).  Vanier College does not provide an accompanist.

Classical voice

1) Scales: major and minor in different tonalities.

2) Two contrasting works from the following:

  • Any song or Aria from Twenty-four Italian Songs and Arias of the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries (Schirmer’s Library of Musical Classics, vol. 1722), such as Antonio Caldara’s “Sebben Crudele” or G. Giordani’s “Caro mio ben.”
  • A classical piece of the candidate’s choice

Musical Theatre candidates (Chant classique on SRAM)

1) Scales: major and minor in different tonalities.

2) Two contrasting works from the following:

  • Any song or Aria from Twenty-four Italian Songs and Arias of the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries (Schirmer’s Library of Musical Classics, vol. 1722), such as Antonio Caldara’s “Sebben Crudele” or G. Giordani’s “Caro mio ben.”
  • A Musical Theatre piece of the candidate’s choice

You greatly improve your chances of acceptance when you prepare your audition requirements with the guidance of a qualified Voice teacher.
