Classical oboe audition guide

Components

1) Scales and arpeggios:

  • Up to two flats and two sharps in the major and harmonic minor, 1 or 2 octaves, slurred and detached
  • Chromatic scale to be played two octaves from low C to high C, slurred and detached. 

2) Etudes: one etude chosen from the following or equivalent:

  • 80 Graded Studies (no. 17 or higher) - Selected and edited by John Davies & Paul Harris
  • Gekeler Method for Oboe (no. 1 or 3, p. 21 or equivalent)
  • Barret Method for oboe, 40 progressive melodies
  • W. Ferling 48 Famous Studies for Oboe or Saxophone

3) Repertoire:

  • Two contrasting works in style and tempo. These may be movements of two sonatas/concerti or separate works.

4) Sight reading

  • To be given

High School band parts are not acceptable You greatly improve your chances of acceptance when you prepare your audition requirements with the guidance of a qualified Oboe teacher.
