Jazz piano audition guide

Components

1) Basic chords

• Major, minor, major 6th, minor 6th, major 7th, dominant 7th, minor 7th, diminished and augmented

2) Identify the above chord qualities by ear

3) Major and harmonic minor scales

• Played with hands together for two octaves, ascending and descending

4) Two standards in a Jazz style (ex. Autumn Leaves, Body & Soul or Misty)

• 1 chorus of Melody, at least 1 chorus of improvisation, then 1 chorus of melody again

5) Sight reading

• Lead sheet (melody and chords)
