Ped Day 2024 Learning at Work: inspiring, invigorating, “ingaging”

August 23, 2024

On August 15th, teachers became learners when the Pedagogical Support & Innovation office hosted Vanier College’s Pedagogical Day. The annual event, which invites teachers and staff to learn together, took a fresh approach this year. With its theme of Learning at Work, this year’s Ped Day diverged from its traditional approach of offering talks, panels, and workshops from “experts” to offer participatory experiences (including creative visioning exercises) that helped participants tap into their aspirations and articulate individual and collective learning goals. They were then offered the opportunity, through a learning fair, to build a network of connections with individuals, groups, and services at Vanier that could support their achievement of these goals.

“In our rapidly evolving world, education is more dynamic than ever,” said Academic Dean Sandrina Joseph in her opening remarks. “We are witnessing unprecedented advances in technology, shifts in societal needs, and new discoveries that are constantly reshaping the academic landscape. As educators, you are charged with the responsibility of preparing our students for a future we can barely predict.  To do this, Vanier has to embrace continuous learning. Each new concept, skill, or perspective we acquire rejuvenates our passion and curiosity, and keeps our own intellectual capacity growing.”

A total of 73 participants (3 management, 12 professionals, 6 support staff, and 49 teachers) from 23 different departments took part in Ped Day. Feedback has largely been positive, with participants celebrating the appreciative quality of the day and how it opened paths to meaningful reflection and connection. Many participants have commented on how the activities supported their commitment to adopting more intentional practices.

“To build on this momentum, the PSI office is proud to launch the Learning at Work Calendar, which aims to connect Vanier community members to the many learning opportunities (workshops, symposia, learning circles, etc.) offered at the College,” said Julia Hall, Ped Day co-organizer. “Our hope is that this resource will help community members to perceive Vanier College as a place of impactful learning for both students and employees. If you would like to submit an event to the calendar, please fill out this form. Wishing you a great semester!”
