Vanier’s Building Engineering Technology program prepares students to design the electrical, ventilation, temperature control and refrigeration systems of buildings using engineering principles.

In this program, students learn the principles of mechanics, thermodynamics, applied math and systems design. They study the complex workings of essential building systems and how to install, operate and maintain them. This knowledge is then applied to modern buildings of all sizes. Students get the chance to examine the systems of prominent buildings such as Place des Arts and Place Ville Marie as part of their studies.

Graduates of the program go on to work in consulting engineering firms as designers, in building maintenance as supervisors, in HVAC manufacturing and sales, as well as in governmental agencies as inspectors. They are qualified to become members of the Ordre des technologues professionnels du Québec (OTPQ) and the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), which provide professional recognition and access to awards, professional contacts, and job information. Approximately 20% of graduates choose to go on to university, with many obtaining advanced standing at select institutions.

Due to the growing demand for skilled workers in this sector, the government of Quebec is offering eligible Building Engineering students a Perspective scholarship valued at $1,500 per semester of full-time studies. Students also have the opportunity to participate in the Work-Study program, in which they complete two paid summer internships (in addition to a compulsory internship in the final semester).
