Vanier’s Special Education Techniques program (formerly known as Special Care Counselling) prepares students to work with individuals of all ages in the fields of prevention, education and rehabilitation.

In this program, students learn various therapeutic and intervention models and how to apply them when working with populations with special needs. They study a range of disabilities, disorders and adjustment issues and prepare to accompany and support clients in their personal and social development. Students then apply and integrate this knowledge through 3 supervised internship placements.

Graduates leave the program qualified to work with individuals of any age with physical, neurological, psychosocial, mental health and developmental needs. As technicians, they are employed by schools, residential treatment centres, youth protection services, shelters, group homes, hospitals and other organizations offering specialized support. Vanier’s Special Education Techniques offers its students a mentorship program as well as other resources to support their success in the program. Students wishing to go on to university also benefit from advanced standing and course equivalencies at select institutions.
